Attention centres on the capital in New Zealand for this weekend blockbuster, an opening affair to get the mouths-watering, which sees Auckland head to Wellington.  Neither team could muster enough, gusto to better the elite Cantabrians last year, and will both clearly view that as the goal for 2021, with both teams given good chances of winning the title again.  Wellington are $5.50 hopes while Auckland are slightly more fancied at $5, while both teams stand as the two that are capable of knocking Canterbury off their pedestal, with the other pair of teams (Waikato and Otago) lesser odds according to bookies.  Beautiful conditions are predicted in Wellington for this game, with temperatures around 20 degrees, in the evening, unusually warm, while no rain and very little wind is about to obstruct the playmaking.

Auckland focused on adding strength to their forwards in the offseason, and landed Laulala who will certainly be a fine addition, making their scrumming power admirable.  Samoan James Lay also starts, while the coaching staff are pleased with the shape of Ioane, who is sure to be a key forward also.  Auckland have also added Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens as well as Zarn Sullivan to their backs, while Darry is one to watch at lock.  Having beaten both Auckland and Canterbury last season, Wellington look set for a big 2021, they have Savea returning while the other marquee signing is former Blue Visinia.  Some questions do need to be answered following the departures of Beauden Barret and TJ Perenara, in the halves, with Luke Campbell and Booth the likely competitors to partner Hickey or Garden-Bachop most games.

Auckland were just too good last year in the round 1 fixture, winning 30-20, though at this venue they produced a miracle, when they took a last-gasp 29-27 victory in the return fixture, just 5 weeks later.  Despite losing Ben May the Canes look to have a very strong engine room this season, led by Aumua, Fidow and Lomax, giving captain Savea optimism in their chances of toppling the opponents.  The Blues are favourites for this game, despite being on the road, with odds of $1.77, while the Canes are $2.10, and the predicted margin tells more of the story, as it is just 2 points, meaning it is anyone’s guess how this fixture will pan out.

PREDICTION: Wellington at home by less than 5.

BETTING TIP: $2.90 is value if you think Wellington will win, in the 1-12 margin market, otherwise the Auckland by 1-12 is also attractive at $2.75, with the given being a close game.
