Villarreal vs Salzburg – UEFA Europa League Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Round of 32 return leg, with Villarreal taking on Salzburg on Thursday the 25th of February, 2021, at Estadio de la Cerámica.

Villarreal traveled to Austria last week to face Salzburg not being in good form, they had two draws and two defeats in their last four games in Spain, including a painful 1-0 defeat at Levante in Copa del Rey (they got eliminated), but they definitely played their cards correctly in Salzburg, opened the scoring late in the first half (having missed a penalty earlier), and in the 71st minute they did not exactly secure qualification, but they definitely earned themselves a massive advantage, a 0-2 away from home. Their current form reads; DWLDL. They last played on Sunday, they drew 1-1 with Athletic in Bilbao. They are on 37 points from 24 matches in La Liga, 6th in the table. They have 8W, 13D and 3L, having scored 33 goals, and conceded 25. Coach Unai Emery played a 4-4-2 formation against Salzburg last week, with Paco Alcácer and Gerard Moreno up front. Alcácer was the one who missed the penalty in the 29th minute (poorly taken, Salzburg’s goalkeeper blocked the ball), but also who scored the opener in the 41st minute. Fer Niño came off the bench in the 60th minute substituting Alcácer, and scored the second goal in the 71st.

Unlike Villarreal, Salzburg had been flying from one win to another for weeks before hosting the Spanish side, but that meant… nothing last week. That 0-2 leaves them with a mountain to climb, but things will change if they score an early goal, and/or go to the dressing room at halftime leading. Their current form reads; WLWWW. They last played on Sunday, they beat Rapid Vienna 4-2 at home. They are on 43 points from 18 matches in Austria’s championship, leading, now by six points (they doubled their gap on second-placed Rapid). Goals, 58 scored, 20 conceded. Coach Jesse Marsch played a 4-4-2 formation against Villarreal last week, with Daka and Berisha up front.

Last week’s win was Villarreal’s third over Salzburg, in five matches. The other two games have gone the Austrian side’s way. Goals in total, 7-5 for Villarreal.

A 2-1 victory for the hosts is predicted at full-time.

Date: Thursday, 25th of February, 2021.
